Impact Of Government

The greatest challenges to the hearth industry are governmental regulations that impact our livelihood.  Knowledge is the key to protecting ourselves and our buisnesses.  By joining your HPBA affiliate and becoming involved in the regulatory issues facing our states, you help not only your own business but the industry as a whole.  It takes all of us getting involved in the political issues facing our industry to keep opposing interests from determining our fate.

The fireplace industry faces more governmental regulation than any other building material industry segment because we impact both the environment and energy- two of the most hotly debated areas of  national concern.  Even though regulation is formed at the national level, it is almost always implemented at the local  level.  That's why it is so important for MAHPBA to keep an ear to the ground and answer the call to action at the local level.  We need to educate our legislators about our industry and our products.  That means at any level, from town officials to senators in Congress.  Whether we like it or not, government can be like having another partner in our business, and they are more often than not a partner that is not much help!

Step 1 MAHPBA builds a database of known politicians
We need you to let us know who, if anybody, you know in government at any level.  That way when issues arise in your area, we can send you information that could be passed on to that official on our industry's behalf.

Step 2 Know the issues affecting our industry
Every one of us needs to get educated and stay updated on legislative and regulatory activity.  Take advantage of materials like Fireline, HPBA Government Affairs committee's quarterly e-mail newsletter and HPBA Hot News.  Sign up for \"Action Alerts\" on the HPBA website so you can be notified when issues arise.

Step 3 Get involved with one of your elected reps
Invite a local politician to your store to learn more about the issues related to hearth products.  Get involved in a local campaign and get to know the candidate.

Step 4 Consider becoming a MAHPBA State Code Coordinator
Become a part of the local fight to preserve our right to make a living in the hearth industry.  Give as much or as little time as you can-  every bit of participation helps!

Your membership dues fund this effort.  Join MAHPBA today and help us be proactive.  The vitality of our industry and the economic survival of your business are at stake.

We urge you to be an active part of MAHPBA’s efforts to stay on top of government regulations. We will all be stronger as a result.  Login for more information.
